Disclaimer: This is a statistical estimate of the population. Because the data gathered was not intended for this type of analysis, we cannot verify how close this estimate is to the actual population.

Have you ever wonder how tall you really are? Even though you know what your own height is, you don't know how tall all the other people are. Unless you know this, you can't really say whether you are "really" tall or not.

The following is an interpretation from a survey conducted by National Center for Health Statistics. The original data table is converted so that people can view it more easily.

The original data can be found at this address if you want to verify our conclusions:

1) How Tall is an Average 20-Year-Old American?

In this survey, the average height of 20-year-old a male American is 69.63 inches, or 5-foot-9 6/10 inches (176.85 cm) and for a 20-year-old female American is 64.31 inches, or 5-foot-4 3/10 inches (163.34 cm).

For how this statistic breaks down among different ethnicities, see: How Tall is an Average American?

From this table, we can see that if you are a 6-5 male, 99.5930%, or 9,959 out of 10,000 other 20-year-old male whom you randomly come across will be shorter than you. Out of 10,000 you randomly see, there would be 41 people taller than you.

If you are a 6-2 female, 99.9823% of random 20-year-old women you see will be shorter than you. This means there will be less than 2 people out of 10,000 that will be taller than you.

On another token, if you are 6-11 male or 6-5 female, 99.9999% of people of same gender that you randomly come across will be shorter than you.

If you come across 10,000 random 20-year-old people, you have a very good chance that you will not see anyone taller than you.

The table above is just an estimate of the size of a random 20-year-old crowd of the same gender you are likely to be the tallest.

If you are a 6-3 male, then you are likely to be the tallest person in a crowd of 36 people. If you are a 5-10 female, you are likely to be the tallest woman in a random crowd of 23 20-year-women.

If you are a 6-8 male, you are likely to be the tallest person in a random crowd of 10,000 people, or if you are a 6-2 female, you are likely to be the tallest person in a crowd of about 5,000 20-year-old women, a crowd the size of a popular sports game (of course, a sporting game is not a random crowd)..

On the other hand, if you are 5-5 male or 5-1 female, you are not likely to be the tallest person in a crowd.

Please keep in mind this is just a statistical estimate- just like other polls like the president's approval ratings. This is just to give you a better idea of how tall you really are!
